My favorite part of hosting any event, is getting to do all of the decorations. I think I actually get more excited at the prospect of all the DIY project possibilities, than the event itself. I don’t get to be very creative in my day job, so any chance to break out some glitter and a glue gun is like a celebration. My friends and family have learned over time that even if there is a party being thrown ‘for me’ I would be in charge of the décor.
Since we decided to keep our second baby’s sex a surprise, I knew this shower was going to have a very different theme than our first one. With Grace, it was all about pink, everywhere you turned, but with this little one I decided to keep it very gender neutral and incorporate winter to be part of the theme. This made the choice for a color scheme easy: silver and white. I am not a huge fan of overly cheesy baby shower decorations, so I wanted to keep this looking like an adult dinner party (which this was) with touches of baby décor. The main thing I really wanted to have were 3 large flower arrangements, since we would be having one long table, using all white flowers in birch bark vases I found at the SF Flower Mart. I’ve been dying to use them for an event and this couldn’t have been a better fit. When my flower order came in though, the day before the event, I saw that the white garden roses I ordered had yellow centers. After a moment of panic I decided that I didn’t have a choice but to move forward, and once I divided them among the other flowers the yellow actually added a nice touch of contrast.
My next projects were making the glitter baby bottles for the table, mini champagne bottles for favors, and the large wine and champagne bottles. Lots of spray paint and glitter bombs later, I was happy with the finished products. My kitchen table and husband would not agree J. I love the look of glitter but working with it is a commitment larger than marriage. You have to decide that you would be ok with it sticking around for a while, for better or worse! I shot tutorials of all these projects and cannot wait to share them with you soon!
The shower dinner itself was perfect. Just my close girlfriends and a few family members. Small and intimate, and exactly what I wanted. I got home that night exhausted and happy. Now that this project was over, it was time to focus on what’s really important: welcoming our little peanut in a few weeks. Little did I know it would be a lot sooner than that!
