There are certain brands that leave an immediate impression on you. That make you stop scrolling, taking a long pause to admire their unique point of view. The excitement that you are seeing a piece that’s truly fresh and different. This was my exact reaction when I first saw BFYNE’s Instagram page. “Wow! I need that in my life” I thought. Followed by “I hope I’m cool enough to pull their pieces off!” Happily, for me, it seems that their statement bathing suits and covers ups come with a free dose of self-confidence, because the second I put them on, I was channeling my inner glamazon. This feeling is no accident. It was just what the designer Buki Ade had intended when she started the line, with a single piece. Her line is an “apologetic tribute to women’s curves and confidence” and shines the spotlight on the richness of African culture. The colors and prints immediately bring joy and the design of the pieces is a true labor of love.
When I started to take stock of what brands I am promoting on this blog two months ago, I wanted to make sure that the Black Lives Matter wasn’t a movement that would speak about only while it was on every news channel. It affected me deeply and I wanted to make sure that I continue to do my small part to shine the light on some amazing and incredibly inspiring artists and designers (see artist spotlight HERE for some breathtaking artists!) on my platforms. BFYNE was at the very top of that list. There is something about a strong woman carving out her own path and making her beautiful voice heard, that just makes my heart fill up with joy. I look forward to showcasing more black owned brands here in the coming weeks. I hope you will dive in and see all the magical pieces that BFYNE has to offer!
