Every time I step off an airplane and my feet touch NYC ground, I feel a surge of energy. Is it being raised by Sex & The City episodes all throughout high school that has forever left me longing for NYC, with its magic promise of love, fashion and beautiful heartbreak? This city does and will forever feel like the one that got away. A true love you could have seen yourself having a future with.

I always thought I would live in New York ‘when I grew up’. I planned on going to school there and had already begun my Carrie Bradshaw vintage store wardrobe collection, far before high school was over.

But once it was time to s*%it or get off the pot, well I guess I just got scared. I fully intended to move to NYC without knowing a single soul there or having any financial ability to survive. But as my high school graduation loomed, I just couldn’t pull the trigger. I’ve already done the big move across an ocean once and it was pretty damn traumatizing. Sure, I was 13 and had to learn a whole new language but this felt just as BIG.

I settled on a fashion school in San Francisco and did the smaller move, out of my parent’s house. And honestly spent years regretting it. Decades later every time I travel to NYC, walking those busy streets, I can’t help but wonder what could have been between this city and I? Could we have made it work? Could NYC in the end have been my ‘Mr.Big’?

I am 100% in love with the life I ended up with. I honestly would not change it for the world. What I would change though is telling the 18-year-old me that now is the time to make crazy decisions, to do the big move. To take chances and know that you will fail. To throw caution to the wind and just figure it out. So, if you are reading this and are at a time in your life when responsibility has yet to break down your door and is only slightly knocking, choose adventure! Choose YES. Choose you. Pack your suitcase and see where your young heart can take you. Because the truth is, as you look back on your life years later, you will only regret the things you DIDN’T do!

an almost New Yorker.
